1st Session Faculty of Communication Atma Jaya Yogyakarta University (UAJY)
10:00 AM
The first session on this day taken place in a broadcasting studio UAJY (http://uajy.ac.id) that was provided by a broadcasting community in UAJY called FIAT TV. This community specialization in making videos for broadcasting inside the university. The videos itself could be in form of news, reviews or even small movies.
Andreas Siagian (Andreas) from HONF which was an alumnus of UAJY faculty of Civil Engineering opened the first session with an explanation about HONF, education focus program and Cellsbutton#01. After the explanation, he continued with a short introduction about media art and the participants on these presentations.

A collaborative group of Ariadna Alsina Tares (Ari) from Spain and Therese Schuleit (Therese) from Germany was giving presentation following after Andreas’ explanations. In this presentation Ari and Therese were explaining how in Euro-Asian Channel (EA Channel) they make collaborative works from the creative idea of its members. The members then make a proposal on what they plan in doing and continued with interests and responses from other members. Even though they main communication was by internet, they successfully developed the ideas into reality.

One of their given examples was the proposal of Yuichi Nagao (Yuichi) from Japan about hearing earth. As Ari and Therese’s explained, Yuichi which is one of the members of EA Channel was proposing for each member of EA Channel to make a soundscape work of their own and then play them all together at once from the internet. This enables artists from all over the world to collaborate even though they are separated by distance. Ari and Therese also collaborate through internet to make their work which is called Presence/Absence.

Again after Ari’s and Therese’s, a presentation from collaborative work by Brian Sherry (Brian) and Clare Shanahan (Clare) was started. Both of them came from Republic of Ireland. One of their works that were presented was an interactive media installation called ‘Age/Sex/Location’ (ASL). In this interactive art piece, ASL allows audience to walk through the materialized chat room. Other people are represented with a ‘smiley’ for a face; this is how emotion is represented in text in cyberspace. As they explained, ASL aims to illustrate the vast amount of communication the internet provides, but simultaneously portraying how flat the whole process is. We spend more time interfacing with each other via computer screens than actually looking into the face of our fellow human beings. FIAT TV community then closing this session with their presentation of their previous work. They were displaying some of their broadcasting, videos and movies.

After the session ended, they created a warm discussion with Ari, Therese, Brian and Clare about their works and personal introduction.
