Presentation at HONF lab

Next on Cellsbutton#02 presentation, workshop and discussion series were a presentation from Alex Schaub from FabLab, Netherlands and JackD2 from Mainhack, Indonesia. Alex started the session with his presentation about FabLab (abbreviation for Fabrication Laboratory), which Alex explain as a kind of workshop with a few advanced digital controlled production machines. FabLab itself is a rapid prototyping platform, and as such is meant to encourage local entrepreneurs to make their own ideas from the drawing board to prototypes to starting local micro businesses, FabLab also teaches users critical skills in computing, electronics, programming and CAD/CAM fabrication techniques – a set of internationally recognized skills. In relation to what Alex intention in the presentation for HONF was FabLab as a platform from which a community's technical challenges can be shared with an international roster of engineers, who can help problem solve and design solutions for the community. Alex later explained that a FabLab could be hosted by HONF in Yogyakarta and open for everybody.

JackD2 then continued the session with a workshop on hacking an Internet system by a simple method of trial and error by maintaining and gathering metadata file from the web. The workshop from Jack became interesting since there has been a vague identification of hacking purposes and use in the Internet. This workshop brought up the question of the security of the information on the web could be guaranteed.
Meanwhile, on the same time with the session, a screening in Kinoki Café were playing recent works from:
1. ZTOHOVEN (Czech Republic)
2. Blendid (Netherlands)
3. Generator (Czech Republic)
4. Dirty Handz (France)
5. Branko Andric (Austria)
6. AVmotional platform (Romania)
7. Luka Princic (Slovenia)
8. Marko Batista (Slovenia)
9. Marko Ornik (Slovenia)
10. Tanja Vujinovic (Slovenia)
11. Tomaz Tomazin (Slovenia)

Lecturer’s Written Explanation:
Alex Schaub:
Introduction
When HONF invited me for a presentation at their new media festival Cells button #2, I thought the best thing I could do is to present the concept of a Fablab. Since a half year I am Fablab manager in Amsterdam, and I have seen a big variety of people doing all kinds of stuff in our lab. From architects to designers to artists, or just whatever people with nice ideas produced a lot of stuff. You can see more than 50 documented ones here.
So what is a Fablab?
A Fablab is a kind of workshop with a few advanced digital controlled production machines. You can compare it with what a factory would have as a ‘research and development‘ department.
The concept of Fablab has been developed by Neil Gershenfeld from MIT during a class 'How to make almost anything'.
Since then, the Fablab has developed into a global network of standardized open hardware setups. People from all over the world are using it to create and develop their own ideas and solutions. Together with FabLab.nl, Waag Society started to introduce the concept in the Netherlands. In co-operation with Picnic, Picnic Jr and Mediamatic with its exhibition space, a promotion campaign started in 2007.
Waag Society offers workshop formats for technical education, but also uses the FabLab as a rapid prototyping facility for their own and their partners’ use.
Furthermore, the lab is open two days a week for the general public to come in and realize their own ideas.
The Open Hardware approach is in line with the Open Source and Open Content (CC) communities.
Conclusion
Since I got really nice responds from my friends in Yogyakarta, my vision is to build a FabLab in Yogyakarta, which is hosted by HONF, and open for everybody. The idea is to open the new FabLab at Cellsbutton#03 next year in August. Fingers crossed…
