One of our objectives was to bridge the gaps between technology, theory and art. We performed in universities like Duta Wacana University (UKDW), Satya Wacana University (UKSW), Gadjah Mada University (UGM), Sanata Dharma University (USD), and Indonesia Institute of the Arts (ISI). With these presentations we intended to create a direct dialogue between creators and people around them.
For this focus, we want to build a bridge between universities and local communities interested in new media. One important reason is that there are no media courses or media faculties here. But in our perspective, technology can offer many possibilities for artistic development. Hence we want to make new networking possibilities: between universities with expertise and art schools that can offer the aesthetic context for media art.

- Venzha, Tommy Surya, Istasius Praditya, Daniel Hiu, and Irene Agrivina: (HONF, yogyakarta new media art labotratory)
- Vindryanto/Yance (pediatric specialist community)
- Anton Christanto, Soepomo Soekardono, Agus Surono, and Novi Primadewi (Otolaryngology Head and Neck Specialist community)
- Jaka Widada, and Irfan. (Biotechnology and Bioinformatics community)
The purposes of these projects were:
- to classify all the communities that worked in advanced technology development in Yogyakarta and other cities in Indonesia,
- to create a collaborative work pattern for inter-creative communities involved in this projects and then to look the beneficial output which were potentially could be developed through more studies and researches,
- to establish a interactive communications between communities and universities through presentations and workshops after the output and result of these projects have been researched. The purpose in these communications was to transfer all the knowledge and breakthroughs in these projects to the society.
These projects were meant for:
- other communities either with direct or indirect correlation, but still have the same principles in technology development,
- schools and universities which have interests in these projects or contain related faculty and study program with these project,
- the general public who uses the output or result from these projects.

During 2005, ‘the house of natural fiber (HONF)’ collaborates with some groups or communities with different educational backgrounds to work on projects that were developed from several laboratory work samples which produced independently through these collaboration. HONF tried to look creative communities with potentials ability in development and application of advanced technology and gathered them to interact through workshops and presentations held in numbers of universities/laboratories and also creative communities. These projects classified on composition in technical and aesthetic in every studies and research in technologies and also from outputs that produced by public interactions, workshops and presentations that was held after the research or study process. From those projects, HONF presented three different projects in its application with creative communities and universities. Those projects are:
1. Hey, ma ROBOT will find you!
A laboratory work process on basic interface system for simple robotic mechanism. Essentially, this project was expanded from a basic interface system that was researched and developed by a community in ‘ Gajah Mada University’. This community consist persons from physic and informatics educational background that interested in software and mechanic development. HONF collaborate with this community to apply the basic interface system adaptation and interaction activity on its surrounding environment, objects and activities. The outputs from this collaboration were work modules that can be simply translated as public consumptions. The outputs also produced numerous software which continuously developed for robotic mechanism works application and presented in some of HONF workshops in 2006.
2. ICU in ma mind
In this project, HONF explored on electronic hardware and computer systems that were used in an ICU room for medical data detection from human bodies. In this exploration HONF collaborate with a group of surgeons and specialist from some hospitals in Indonesia. The exploration itself started in 2004 with developing a research on how the media that were used for the project works and interacts in the ICU and surrounding environment. The application from this exploration was interaction between human body used as a parameter with frequencies and sound sources from an ICU room experimentally combined with effects and sound sequence from a hardware that developed by HONF itself. The outputs of this project were possibilities aesthetic areas in sound, sound sources exploration and introductions of human bodies’ detection hardware. HONF continuously expand this project until present day to seek the logical possibilities and sound aesthetics produced using a super sterilized operation surgical room environmental as its media. 3. Sorry, I change your protein!
HONF collaborate with a community of researcher and specialist in Biotechnology and Bioinformatics from ‘ Gajah Mada University’ which constantly researching and developing on microbiology and genetics. In this project, HONF worked on finding educational observation solutions through this collaboration and processing the outputs into an interaction between human and Biotechnology. An example from that output was a project named ‘ANALYSIS OF BACTERIAL CONSTITUENTS OF THE ACTIVE BENIGN CHRONIC SUPPURATIVE OTITIS MEDIA WITH RIBOSOMAL INTERGENIC SPACER ANALYSIS-POLYMERASE CHAIN REACTION APPROACH’. The project itself was an expansion from studies and researches by Dr. Anton Christanto (Department of Otolaryngology Head and Neck Surgery, Faculty of Medicine, ‘ Gadjah Mada University’/’Dr. Sarjito Hospital, Yogyakarta’) and he’s team about bacteria present in the activebenign chronic suppurative otitis media . Dr. Anton and he’s teammates then collaborate with Dr. Jaka Widada Ph.D. (Department of Post Graduate Laboratory of Biotechnology, ‘Gadjah Mada University’, Yogyakarta) who specialist on Biotechnology and HONF (Yogyakarta new media art laboratory) to established a culture-independent by using ribosomal intergenic spacer analysis (RISA) to survey bacteria present in the active benign chronic suppurative otitis media without fastidious cultivation. The output from this collaboration was that culture-independent approach (RISA) is the robust method to determine bacterial constituent middle ear fluid discharge. This research achieved the accuracy in bacteria detection and finding the exact remedy or treatment for human ear diseases.
In this collaboration project, HONF and all communities involved organized 3 work steps which were:
- (2005) brain storming, research, presentation and developing learning process.
Each community studied accordingly to its educational backgrounds, disciplines and specialties on infrastructure studies and development,
- (2006) medical data applications to patients, presentation to various communities and universities.
The objectives in this process are to make a continuous expanding circular information connection, DNA application, molecular theory and genetics engineering. The purpose of this connection was to developed the potentials in communities related to the subject,
- (2007) producing molecular theory modules and software.
HONF will expand the previous steps into a conclusion that clarify a sample of laboratory work process in a simplified module which consisted molecular theory explanation and application on audience / public.
